My Unconventional Advice for Staying Fit During the Holidays

I know the holidays are near.

IMG_8362-X3I know this time of year everyone gets very busy.

Believe me, I know there are a lot of things pulling you away from your workout schedule.

BUT (this is a big but) I also know the average American consumes approximately 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat from eating a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. And this doesn’t include breakfast, lunch, or snacking on leftovers. And this is just one day. What about the entire holiday season which extends past New Years?

We all have read the stats on holiday weight gain: the average American gains 1 to 2 pounds during the holiday season, and these extra pounds tend to become permanent weight gain. And what about those of us who are working on long term goals like rehabilitating an injury or reducing tension and creating more balance in the body? I bet you’d be surprised by how quickly we begin to lose strength and slump back into our old bad habits. Afterall if you don’t use it, you lose it!

I don’t mean to be Debbie Downer. I’d rather be more like a sweet lil’ angel on your shoulder who reminds you of all the work you’ve done throughout the year to look and feel great, and to remind you being strong and pain-free reduces stress, makes you happy, and allows you to fully enjoy your life!

Before you know it February will be here and you won’t have had a session for 3 months. So don’t let exercise and eating well be the first to go with the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, parties and festive traditions.

Strengthen Your “No-Muscle”

If you say “yes” to a holiday party, say “no” something else. “No” to an ordinary happy hour on a Thirsty Thursday. “No” to the holiday candies your coworker tempts you with every time you pass by. “No” to that devil in your head that pushes the snooze several times and let’s you miss your morning Pilates class or workout. The truth is we must say “no” to many temptations that derail us from our goals. Saying “no” is almost like a muscle we need to strengthen. At first, it’s weak and gives in quickly. But with practice and repetition, it gets stronger and stronger. The stronger your “No-Muscle”, the closer you will stay to your health and fitness goals.

Plan Fitness Around the Party

Sure I could tell you to go to the party and eat perfectly, drink one drink and then water for the rest of the evening, etc. But what if you planned ahead for the party by spending these chilly Fall mornings or evenings working out? Perhaps you could find a reasonable way to increase exercise preemptively. Will that mean cutting something out? Maybe. Maybe it’s 30 minutes less sleep, or maybe not going out to lunch with coworkers in order to sweat-it-out in Pilates or at the gym. You decide what you can live without in order to enjoy the abundance and decadence of holiday festivities. For me, I’m getting up earlier and I’m remembering how much I liked to bundle up on cold Fall days as a child to play soccer. Today, I’m taking 25 minutes to run/walk the Coit Tower stairs.

Put Your Money Where Your Goals Are

I frequently hear people say “I’m busy and traveling around the holidays so I’ll just wait until the New Year to purchase my next Pilates next package.”  In my experience, this is a sure fire way to get off-track on your fitness.  By purchasing a package of sessions you’re in essence making a commitment to your health. Putting your money into a package and scheduling a few sessions for when you are in town, keeps you accountable and motivated.  For the majority of us (including me), when I get out of my routine it is hard to get back in it. If you can keep even just a tiny semblance of your routine going, it is easier to ramp it back up in the new year. It’s much easier to ramp up then start from scratch!

There are a few myths about packages we need to clear up:

“I have to book all of the sessions in my package at the time of purchase.” False. When you purchase a package you’re simply purchasing that number of sessions that can be used whenever you like. You can come 1x/week or 1x/day or 3x/day (That’s hardcore! Yes, you know who you are!)

“It’s too difficult to book and keep track of how many sessions I have left.” We try to make this as easy as possible by offering online scheduling and account services. By default, all clients who have taken class at the studio have an online account. You can login to your account anytime of day from any computer, phone, or tablet to check your schedule, cancel a class, make additional purchases, and see how many sessions remain on your package. It’s Easy Peezy! To begin go to www.bluesparrowpilates.com then click on the upper right “LOGIN”. If you’re an existing client click “Forgot Your Password.” If you’re a brand new client go ahead and register as a “New Client”.

“I won’t use all of my sessions before they expire.” The vast majority of clients do use their sessions before they expire. We offer a huge expiration period of 6-months. That’s half of a year! Additionally, we recently added a Package Share policy. This allows you to share your packages with family members. So if you have a family member in town for the holidays, share Pilates with them by signing up to come to class together!
