Holly Furgason is the founder and CEO of Blue Sparrow Pilates with locations in San Francisco (2007) and Oakland (2015), CA. Renowned for excellence in the Bay Area, Blue Sparrow Pilates attracts students from around the world as the only STOTT PILATES® Licensed Training Center in San Francisco. Holly is the creator of Fit4Real.com, a mentorship blog for Pilates instructors, and Prenatal Pilates, a mobile Pilates app designed to train prenatal and postpartum women at home.

Holly has been studying Pilates for close to 17 years and teaching in San Francisco since 2004. Holly completed her STOTT PILATES training in 2001, and then went on to become a STOTT PILATES Instructor Trainer in Mat and Reformer (2011) and Cadillac, Chair, and Barrels (2015), CORE Athletic Conditioning Instructor Trainer (2013), and a Total Barre Instructor Trainer (2015).

Holly’s challenging classes and playful personality have established her as a powerful name in Pilates. In a recent article Holly was called a “favorite Bay Area fitness gurus.” Holly is a blogger for Pilates Style Magazine and in 2013 was voted as one of the top ten instructors international through Pilates Anytime. In 2013 Holly joined the faculty at Mills College to train dancers to teach Pilates. With well over 10,000 hours of teaching experience, Holly has worked with a wide range of clientele from severely injured to high level athletes. Holly has extensive experience working with a diverse range of injuries including chronic pain, scoliosis, herniated/slipped/bulging discs, back pain, shoulder & rotator cuff tears, knee and hip issues, tendonitis, labral tears, ACL tears, hip and knee replacements, post-polio, breast cancer recovery, and pre/post-natal recovery.

Melissa is classically trained in ballet and modern dance, and performed professionally in Minneapolis, MN and the Bay Area. She certified in STOTT PILATES®in St. Paul, MN (2007), studying with Kelly Dormady, Jill Winnegar, and Deborah Hunt. She completed her STOTT PILATES® full certification in 2012, and then joined the elite ranks of STOTT PILATES® Instructor Trainers in 2014. Melissa offers her lifelong study of movement with Pilates, TRX, barre, and athletic conditioning. She works with a vast array of clients seeking general conditioning, athletic training, injury prevention and rehabilitation. Melissa has training and experience using the Pilates method for back rehabilitation and/or management, breast cancer recovery, osteoporosis, and scoliosis. Additionally she instructs rehabilitation session for injuries ranging from joint replacements; knee meniscus tears and ACL repairs; ankle sprains and fractures; shoulder and rotator cuff strains and tears; pregnancy related trauma. Eryn’s path to GYROTONIC® came from a deep love of the body’s ability to move, expand, heal and change. She first began practicing GYROTONIC® in 2001 and was so moved by the practice that she went on to certify as a teacher in 2007. Trained as a therapeutic massage therapist, Reiki master and Reflexology bodyworker, Eryn has a solid foundation and understanding of anatomy and how movement can help rehabilitate and strengthen the body. Karen was first introduced to Pilates during her years at Queen’s University, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. After moving to Toronto in 2008, she began participating in weekly Reformer classes at the world renowned STOTT PILATES studio. A former dancer and gymnast, Pilates was a natural fit to help rehabilitate old injuries and maintain strength and flexibility, and once she stepped on a Reformer she never looked back.

Karen completed all of her training at the STOTT PILATES International Training Center in Toronto, Canada. In 2013, she was invited to become an Instructor Trainer for STOTT PILATES at the International Training Center in Toronto.

After moving to San Francisco in the spring of 2016, Karen joined the Blue Sparrow team, where she divides her time between teaching clients and instructor education courses. She continues to travel internationally to teach for STOTT PILATES at various hosting sites.

Karen’s passion as an instructor comes from challenging her clients to surpass their own expectations and to constantly strive for more. With this focus on empowerment, and a deep understanding of the Pilates method, she enjoys helping her clients reach their personal goals, regardless of age or fitness level. In addition to witnessing their physical progress, one of Karen’s favorite parts of working with clients is seeing their energy and self-confidence improve. Being able to help people physically and emotionally in such a direct way gives her great satisfaction as an instructor.

Karen has extensive experience working with pre and post-natal clients, as well as post-rehabilitation clients of all types including bulging/herniated/slipped discs, joint replacement, frozen shoulder and rotator cuff injury, labral tears. Her attention to detail and emphasis on proper form are essential in ensuring safety and optimal performance.

Magda has a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Samuel Merritt University and worked as a physical therapist in an outpatient setting since 2005. As a physical therapist Magda has worked with everyone from people with chronic pain to high-level athletes with sport specific injuries.

Magda decided to pursue certification in STOTT PILATES® because of it’s anatomical and research-based approach to the original work of Joseph Pilates. She is passionate about helping others appreciate the value and power of core strength for successful long-term resilience, optimal posture, and injury protection. She loves working with clients after they’ve been discharged from the physical therapy as it allows her to work with the body as a whole, creating unique plans to target each individual’s needs.

Magda uses Pilates to help clients with lower back dysfunction such as disc injuries and sciatica; shoulder rotator cuff injury and frozen shoulder; medial or lateral epicondylitis; hip labral tears; pre/post-natal issues such as diastasis recti or pubic symphysis separation; post hip or knee replacement conditioning; and exercise for Parkinson’s.

A classically-trained professional ballet dancer and teacher, Mae received her BFA from the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She began teaching dance and fitness in 2011 to clients who range from young ballet dancers, to adults new to dance or group fitness.

Mae is certified in STOTT PILATES Mat and Reformer, and continues her course work towards advanced certification on all apparatus. In 2002, Mae was introduced to Pilates as a method to improve her ballet dancing. She immediately fell in love with Pilates as a way to improve performance, strength, and most importantly prevent injury. Through the years, her love for the method has continued to grow.

In every Pilates sessions, Mae shares her passion for Pilates and her excitement to be a part of her students’ journey to strength and fitness. While pushing her clients to the next level, she aims to always be supportive and positive force.

Mae works with a broad range of clients. She specializes in training professional athletes and dancers, as well as those who may not dance but would like to look like a dancer.

Melissa started practicing Pilates in NYC in 2006 as a way to balance the stress of her chaotic advertising agency job and build core strength to help alleviate low back pain.

Through Pilates she grew stronger, improved posture, reduced back tension, and moved more efficiently in every aspect of life.

Over the years her love of health and wellness led her to train in the STOTT PILATES Method, complete a 200-hr yoga certification, as well as group exercise and aquatics certifications. Melissa is certified in STOTT PILATES Mat & Reformer (pending 9/1/2016) and continuing to complete coursework on all apparatus and for all levels.

Melissa is passionate about empowering individuals to find greater body awareness and build strength for overall well-being. She has experience working with people of all ages and levels, from athletes in training seeking improved performance, to those actively aging with focus on mobility and stability.

Her diverse fitness background makes her ideal for working with clients who train across multiple modalities, as well as individuals pursuing effective exercises for prevention of injuries such as low back pain.

Jenna is a professional dancer who has taught ballet, contemporary, and jazz dance for over ten years. She discovered Pilates after experiencing several injuries which were due in part to muscular imbalances. With Pilates Jenna quickly rehabilitated her injuries as well as learn techniques to prevent them in the future.

Jenna is excited to share her love for movement, health, and exercise with others through the Pilates method. Jenna is committed to working closely with clients to help them reach their individual fitness goals. She offers dynamic and energetic sessions focused on proper alignment, balance, strength, and stamina.

Jenna has trained in mat, Reformer, and Stability Chair and is currently working towards full certification in STOTT PILATES. She has taught clients from professional dancers to office workers with limited movement experience.

Ashlee found and fell in love with Pilates in college. Having grown up a self-proclaimed “book nerd” she hadn’t given much thought to sports or movement before college when she found herself needing to move her stressed body to help shake off the pressures of college life and newfound responsibilities as a young adult. Once she realized the beauty and value of movement there was no turning back, and she quickly realized how much Pilates improved several aspects of her life, she had an easier time managing stress, had better posture, and felt an overall sense of strength and well being.

Ashlee continued to practice Pilates after college and after a particularly inspiring class decided to begin her career in Pilates. Ashlee is currently working towards a full certification in the STOTT PILATES® method. Ashlee’s goal is to help clients feel empowered invigorated through movement because it has been an invaluable gift in her life that she would love to share with all that attend her classes.

Originally from Australia, Aerliah trained in ballet, contemporary, jazz and tap dance from a young age. Aerliah turned her focus to music theater dance in college. Her professional dance experience includes theatre, cabaret and television, as well as teaching dance in studios and high school settings.

Aerliah first began practicing Pilates based on the advice from her dance teachers to help avoid injury and build strength. She began her training in the STOTT PILATES ® method in 2014. She is is currently pursuing her level 2 advanced certification.

Aerliah’s goal is to help her clients achieve a healthy mind, body and ease of movement through Pilates, and hopes to impart a love and joy of movement to everyone in her class. Aerliah has worked with a variety of clients looking to supplement other training modalities, pre and post natal clients, as well as injuries such as lower back pain and disk and joint degeneration.

Nicola Zenaty

Nicola was first introduced to Pilates as a young dancer. She trained in classical ballet for over 20 years, attending programs at the San Francisco Ballet School, American Ballet Theater and Miami City Ballet School among others.

After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Neuroscience at UC San Diego, Nicola joined the City Ballet of San Diego to pursue a professional dance career. She later moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area to work in the tech industry. Transitioning from an active career to a desk job quickly took a toll on her wellbeing, so she decided to leave the tech industry and integrate movement back into her life as a Pilates instructor.

Nicola was drawn to STOTT PILATES® scientific approach to the original work of Joseph Pilates. Currently Nicola is pursuing her full STOTT PILATES® certification while working towards a career in nursing.

Nicola has always loved that her Pilates sessions left her feeling energized, strong and balanced. She aims to leave her clients feeling these benefits, as well as help them to better understand proper form and execution of each exercises.

Nicola incorporate her deep understanding of body mechanics into her session and thrives on working with people of all levels. She specializes in working on general conditioning and sculpting, as well as dance and performance training.

Sarah is a lifelong dancer and lover of movement. As a young professional dancer in New York, she discovered Pilates as a way to build dynamic strength and fluid control. Sarah has danced from coast to coast and everywhere in between with the Dance Theatre of Harlem, San Francisco Opera, and Oregon Ballet Theatre, among others. She enjoys collaborating in film, photography, music, technology, and installations with artists around the Bay Area. She currently dances for choreographer Amy Seiwert’s contemporary ballet company, Imagery.

Sarah began her STOTT PILATES® teacher training at Blue Sparrow Pilates in 2013, and is currently working towards full certification.

Sarah believes that Pilates is a part of a healthy, well-rounded lifestyle. She enjoys sharing her knowledge and passion for Pilates with people of all backgrounds and age. Sarah specializes in working with athletes and dancers to maximize their athletic potential.

Kim is a choreographer and professional dancer. Her love of movement led her to train to be a STOTT PILATES® instructor. Kim began her Pilates education with Holly Furgason while completing her BA in Dance at Mills College, Oakland, CA. Kim currently is trained in Mat, Reformer, and barrels, and is pursuing her full certification in STOTT PILATES®.

Kim’s love for Pilates grew overtime through intense anatomical study and many hours of Pilates training. She began to feel a difference in her muscular awareness, dance technique, and overall strength. In all her clients, Kim hopes to nurture and inspire this same passion for Pilates, along with a sense of body intelligence, strength, and well-being. Her playful approach to Pilates means session are not only effective, but they are also fun.

Kim works with a broad range of clients from individuals who just want general conditioning, to weekend athletes, and professional dancers.

A classically-trained dancer and teacher, Maria trained at world-renowned dance institutions including the Royal Ballet School, Elmhurst Ballet School and The London Studio Centre. As a professional performer, Maria has appeared in many musicals in London's West End, as well as touring with hit shows which include “Dirty Dancing”, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Mary Poppins” and “White Christmas”. Most recently Maria appeared in “Top Hat” which toured the UK and Japan. Maria discovered the benefits of Pilates as a way to help sustain her demanding dance training by help to prevent injury, improve posture and alignment, and build deep strength. Maria completed her Matwork training in London, and is currently working towards her full certification in STOTT PILATES®. Maria has a passion for sharing her love of Pilates with everyone from dancers and athletes, to people with aches and pains. Training:
