Starting is the most important part of success. Sometimes, it’s so easy to get caught up in wondering about how things will turn out that we lose sight of how to take that first step, whether it’s making a big change like starting a new career, trying a new sport or exercise routine, or letting go of a bad habit. Instead of worrying about failing, or what obstacles you might encounter along the way, focus your energy on what will really happen when you start moving towards your goals and know that you can deal with any challenge as it arises because you’ve already overcome the hardest part just by taking the first step.
If you want to make a change in your life you have to be the one that provides the energy, that takes the steps, and that draws a line in the sand and says you’re not going to let old habits control what your future could be. Habits can be good or bad, but either way, they play a huge role in whether you fail or succeed. Sure, it will take motivation to get past the inertia that has kept you from moving forward but once you make up your mind to take that first step you will begin building that positive kinetic energy that will keep you moving towards your goals and future self.
It’s easy to look at someone else’s success and think that it happened overnight, but most of the time what you’re witnessing is just the last part of their journey. You’re missing all of the work that went into how they arrived. Even the creator of Pilates, Joseph Pilates himself once famously said, “In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you’ll see the difference, and in 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body”. Nothing worth achieving comes without patience and persistence. Choose just one role model and you can be sure that part of their formula is to set small, achievable goals to be repeated each day, day after day, until eventually those small goals add up to a big win, whether in business, sports, or their personal endeavors.
