Athletic Conditioning at Blue Sparrow

Pilates is a system of exercising that strengthens the whole body using a wide variety of exercises. It was created by German-born Joseph Pilates (1880-1967), a man whose sickly childhood led to a determination to find a way to live a long and healthy life. Joseph named his system "Contrology" to describe the method of training the mind to take greater control of the body and it later became known as "Pilates".

Today top athletes around the world have integrated it into their training. If it works for Tiger Woods, Annika Sorenstam, Lance Armstrong, and Roger Federer, it can work for you whether you are a weekend cyclist or olympic hopeful.

With all sports, there are common repetitive stresses and uneven development of muscularture. This can reduce your performance and lead to injury. Pilates can help to counter act these imbalances. Pilates emphasizes core strength and targets underused, intrinsic muscul groups. Balancing work of the large and smaller muscule groups will balance your joints, preventing wear and tear, and allow your body to work more effectively.

Pilates focuses on alignment, control, precision, and breath. Pilates will help athletes:

  • Build long, lean, and toned muscles without adding bulk
  • Balance muscular deveolpmnet throughout the body
  • Increase flexibility
  • Develop better body awareness and alignment
  • Increase balance, control, and strability
  • Increase your lung capacity
  • Increase circulation
  • Help prevent muscle and soft tissues injury
  • Enhance and improve sports activities.
